ustralian industry, and that includes the warehousing sector,
has traditionally been lagging a few years, or decades, behind
international best practice. Visiting businesspeople from
overseas, and even family, would often say to their local counter-
parts: “I can’t believe you’re still doing it that way – we’ve changed that ages ago!”
Of course, the opening up of world markets, partly due to communications, partly due to world trade,
has over the last couple of decades dragged Australian supply chains – both technically and work practic-
es-wise – kicking and screaming into today’s age, and the transformation has been a pleasure to observe.
This growth in interest in Australia in world-standard level warehouse and materials handling
equipment, perhaps together with a drop in demand in their established markets owing to the GFC,
has prompted a number of international suppliers to make an entry into the Australian marketplace.
Local suppliers such as Dematic and Dexion have been offering world’s-best standard racking and
automation for many years now, and continue to come up with new innovations on a regular basis.
Good proof of this, for example, is Dematic’s “ASRS Magic” (pages 56-60), or Dexion’s success in
winning and completing a massive warehouse fit-out for DHL in Hong Kong (“Creating the Interlink
MegaHub”, pages 70-71).
The influx of overseas suppliers is helping warehouse operators make improvements in many other
areas as well, with technologies not previously covered by the established operators. Whether it’s
freight management technology or automatic guided carts using magnetic tapes as the guide, there
has been an explosion of different inventions and technologies covering the full extent and every
single aspect of warehouse operations.
Indeed, warehousing has become the ‘new internationalist’, world class in every aspect.
Get ready for Smart 2015
Although spring has only just begun and the calendar still reads 2014, it is nevertheless a good idea to
start preparing for Smart Conference and Expo 2015, to be held for the first time ever in Melbourne.
Even if you, like many professionals, have been cutting back on your conference attendances, do
mark Smart in your 2015 diary/calendar with an indelible pen. It is one of those events that never
fails to deliver, and with a highly experienced organising team behind it, Smart 2015 will no doubt
once again be ‘the one’ that you go to.
