The New Year is upon us, so much so that 2014 is now but a distant memory. I do hope your
holiday season was relaxing and your New Year's resolutions are holding up - at least the ones
that were worth keeping!
With the Christmas gift-giving season over, it is worth reflecting on what went wrong and what
went right in your supply chain in the busiest time of the year. Efficient distribution has, of course,
two distinct elements, one inside and one outside the proverbial 'four walls' of the building. And
for now, I am only talking about the physical aspects of goods distribution, and not the design and
management issues that also form integral parts of the supply chain.
Inside the walls, effective IT systems, productive racking, storage and automation equipment, and
of course, efficient data capture equipment and systems, enable the order-to-dispatch sequence
to take place in an orderly manner, taking optimal (the minimum) time, no errors, and at low cost
and high efficiency. This relies on trained staff, productive efficient equipment (including materials
handling), and good organisation and layout.
What is often neglected, or not talked about, is 'the outside', what happens once the truck is
loaded and departs from the dock. Transport and delivery to customers are very much left in the
hands of the transport provider or in-house driver, without a thought for efficiency and optimisation.
Yet here, in the area of transport optimisation, is where there are many 'low-hanging fruits' left
hanging, where a relatively small amount of effort could realise significant distribution cost-saving
and efficiency-gaining opportunities.
In this issue of MHD magazine we focus on efficient distribution from an in-house (and within that,
data capture) aspect, as well as transport optimisation.
Are you ready for Smart 2015?
The calendar has turned over to 2015, and it is a good idea to start preparing for Smart Conference
and Expo 2015, to be held for the first time ever in Melbourne.
Like many other supply chain professionals, do mark Smart in your 2015 diary/calendar with
an indelible pen. It is one of those events that never fails to deliver, and with a highly experienced
organising team behind it, Smart 2015 will no doubt once again be 'the one' to go to.
