t is almost a cliché to say these days that the Australian supply chain world is being dragged,
kicking and screaming, into world’s best practice.
There are several reasons for this, but chief amongst them is the internationalisation of the
Australian marketplace. By this I mean not only the continuing influx of global retailers and the
ever-growing electronic/online marketplace, but also the increasingly international nature of the
warehousing equipment and automation supply situation.
In MHD magazine we frequently feature interesting, advanced overseas installations to highlight
the technical progress of warehouse equipment design and manufacturing.
Automation is clearly becoming more and more important and widespread, and so are employee
safety and well-being considerations. Gone are the days when workers manually lifted 50kg-plus
cement bags and built pallets up by hand. These days goods-to-man (or should that be goods-to-
person?) systems are almost mandatory in order-picking applications, and ASRS and other fully
automated put-away and picking installations are also regular features in warehouses.
In our annual Warehouse and DC equipment feature in this issue, we report on Dexion achieving
great success in the Middle East, in which its innovative, Australian-developed Real-time Distribution
System (RDS) played a critical role. Other notable installations featured are Dematic’s world-first
robotic fresh produce picking, palletising and despatch system for Danish retailer Netto, and
KNAPP’s fitting out of a new distribution centre for British Gas that provides 8,000 mobile service
technicians with spare parts and other materials for gas and electrical appliances. We conclude the
special feature with a guide to rising to the ‘click and collect’ challenge using voice technology.
