Melbourne Convention &
SMART 2015 is in Melbourne from 25-27
May 2015 at the Melbourne Convention
and Exhibition Centre.
I recall with considerable pride my
involvement with SMART Conferences over
the past ten years. SMART has provided great
opportunities to learn, network and socialise. For
me, participation has also been an opportunity
to give back to the industry.
As a new NSW Committee member of the
LAA Ltd in 2005, I volunteered to be a coach
captain for a day of site visits. My first exposure
to SMART was fun. ‘Bussing’ around Sydney,
talking with the delegates, introduced me to the
scope and opportunity of the SMART Conference.
In 2007, as National President of the LAA Ltd,
I was a stream chairman for the conference - the
Warehousing, Transport & Distribution Stream.
Introducing speakers, managing questions and
then thanking speakers throughout the day kept
me on my toes. But I was fascinated by what the
speakers had to say and learned about a range
of industry innovations. I again volunteered to
be a coach captain for a day of site visits. Every
warehouse is different and there are lessons to
learn from every visit.
I was precluded by other commitments from
participating in SMART 2009 but returned to
SMART 2011 as a stream chairman. Enjoying
the SMART experience more each year, I agreed
to step up my involvement. In 2012-13, I
chaired the SMART Supply Chain and Logistics
Awards with solid and much valued support
from Scott Edwards of apicsAU. Co-presenting
the awards in 2013 at the outstanding Supply
Chain Industry Dinner in front of 500 delegates
was a career highlight for me. And it was a very
Also in 2013, I again volunteered as a coach
captain and enjoyed one of the best site visits
ever to the Royal Australian Navy’s Garden
Island facility, which also included a guided tour
and morning tea on HMAS Ballarat, an ANZAC
For the past 18 months I have been a director
of SMART Conferences. In a break with tradition,
SMART 2015 will be held in Melbourne. This
has been a challenge for the board and I have
really enjoyed working collaboratively with fellow
directors from apicsAU, Interpoint and LAA Ltd
to rise to the challenge.
SMART remains Australia's leading supply
chain and logistics conference, and the
prestigious SMART Awards are cemented as the
centrepiece of the Supply Chain Industry Dinner
held during the conference.
Holding SMART 2015 at the Melbourne
Convention and Exhibition Centre provides an
opportunity to test the Melbourne market. I
trust as many members as possible have these
dates – Monday 25 to Wednesday 27 May 2015
set aside in their diary. If we are successful in
Melbourne, the opportunity exists for SMART to
become a regular event in the southern city.
SMART Conference 2015 promises to be
a celebration of unity, fellowship and growth
as procurement, logistics and supply chain
professionals from our region and beyond meet
to learn, share and explore.
The SMART Conference 2015 program
looks fantastic. The theme for this year is
‘Competencies for Competitive Advantage’.
There are five streams on 26 & 27 May to
choose from. All include case studies, panel
discussions and keynote presentations from
international speakers. Approximately 70 well
respected speakers have been assembled from
across Australia and internationally.
The registration form is now available. Go to
www.smartconference.com.au or look elsewhere
in this edition MHD Magazine.
In addition to the five streams, there are site
visits available on 25 May 2015 and the evening
of 27 May 2015 will see the Supply Chain
Industry Dinner, the showcase of which will be
the SMART Awards.
Also, there is Smart Expo to add to the
learning experience on 26 & 27 May 2015.
Smart Expo allows delegates and visitors to see
the latest supply chain technologies, products
and processes up close in an impressive
showcase held onsite with Smart Conference.
Smart Expo is Australasia’s largest exhibition
for supply chain professionals and provides an
opportunity to network and source suppliers and
partners of supply chain products and services.
Free to attend, it gives people and companies
a chance to get ahead of the competition by
learning about the latest logistics innovations.
SMART 2015 is a premier event for members
and builds upon the learning and professional
development available in the national events
program. It also provides a forum for suppliers
to showcase their business.
This is likely to be my last SMART
Conference, as I am retiring from the supply
chain and logistics industry in June this year.
Clearly, I have enjoyed the past decade of
involvement with SMART, enjoying the learning,
networking and socialising. SMART Conference
2015 is a key professional development activity
provided to the industry. I look forward to joining
you at this industry showcase event from 25-27
May 2015 at the Melbourne Convention and
