In addition to ASRS pallet handling systems,
Dematic has also developed a high-perfor-
mance, accurate and cost-effective automated
case storage, picking and despatch processing
system for chilled and frozen goods.
Based on the Multishuttle ASRS, the system
-- which has been deployed by food processors,
distributors and retailers in refrigerated environ-
ments in Europe and North America -- provides
an extensive range of advantages over manual
distribution and despatch.
Multishuttle systems can be linked to con-
veyors, with cartons conveyed directly to order
consolidation areas or direct into shipping
containers. Multishuttles can also be linked to
automated palletisers, which can further reduce
the costs, errors and damage associated with
Through Dematic's iQ performance optimising
software, the Multishuttle provides full track and
trace capabilities for every single carton of every
over crane-based solutions
Better space efficiency: one of the key advantag-
es Multishuttle offers compared to crane-based
systems is that Multishuttle systems can be
designed to fit within virtually any space, even
unused headroom. The Multishuttle also utilises
the available cube more efficiently providing
higher density, more cost-effective case storage
in chilled or frozen environments.
Unlimited order assembly flexibility:
Multishuttle systems provide immediate access
to each individual carton and the SKU is auto-
matically delivered to operations or further auto-
mation. No manual interaction is required.
Increased system throughput capacity: the
Multishuttle can pick multiple SKU concurrently
within a single aisle, increasing system through-
put and improving access to stock required
Accurate SKU location mapping: the location
of every carton within a system is always known
and can be queried in real-time by operations
via the integrated iQ software.
Improved system redundancy: If one fails
for any reason, the remainder of the shuttles
continue to operate independently.
Minimal customisation: A key advantage of
the systems is that they require minimal cus-
tomisation, reducing costs and enabling rapid
installation and start-up. All of the hardware
including storage systems, shuttles and system
software is pre-configured.
Automated despatch labelling: Fully automat-
ed carton shipping labelling upon retrieval from
the system can be integrated.
Optimised operational flexibility: Multishuttle
systems can operate around the clock, every
day of the week, providing the ultimate in
operational flexibility. When not required for
order processing, the system undertakes any
necessary housekeeping processes, retrieving
and re-slotting products in 'golden zones' close
to the front of the system to enable faster, more
efficient retrieval of high volume SKU.
A safer workplace: Multishuttle systems sig-
nificantly reduce the need for manual handling
of heavy cartons or totes, reducing the potential
for manual handling injuries. They also signifi-
cantly reduce the need for forklift movements,
further improving workplace safety.
A modular, scalable, flexible solution:
Multishuttle systems can be easily scaled up
with the addition of extra aisles or by increasing
the height or length of the system, providing
future flexibility and reducing initial investment,
and building/leasing costs.
Return on investment: The combination of pro-
ductivity savings, reduced errors, lower building/
leasing and operating costs, and the reduction
of injuries all contribute to a rapid ROI.
With the range of fresh produce that requires
refrigeration and the ongoing growth of the
market for frozen convenience meals and food-
stuffs, the demand for refrigerated storage is
DC that are optimised through the use of
automated storage and handling technologies

meet this demand and deliver high levels of
ASRS and Multishuttle systems provide com-
petitive advantage by reducing labour touches
and improving productivity, increasing service
levels, minimising OH&S risks and enhancing
order processing flexibility, while delivering com-
prehensive tracking, visibility and operational
management capabilities. And the systems
achieve this using significantly less space
compared to conventional storage systems.
ASRS and Multishuttle systems also allow
businesses to review their cold supply chain
networks and identify where they can consol-
idate refrigerated storage and distribution to
reduce total supply chain costs and deliver
superior operational capabilities.

Dematic has launched a new automated
technology and software package for
eCommerce order fulfilment and retail store
replenishment in Australia and New Zealand.
The new systems include batch pick-to-

The batch pick-to-sorter is a large-volume
piece-picking system that is well suited for a
wide variety of order profiles, and automated
storage with GTP workstations is an efficient
method for high-density storage of apparel
items that feed order-picking workstations.
Dematic has also launched a high-perfor-
mance apparel store replenishment system,
light-directed put-to-store, for operations
with a large number of SKU and low to high
Every new system includes Dematic iQ per-
formance optimising software that constantly
runs in the background to help management
evaluate operations and resource allocation.
