THE MORE THINGS
n the preparation for the 2016 Forklift Survey we have just launched (please see www.
TandLnews.com.au and click on the Forklift Survey button), I had occasion to go over the 2014
issue, the last time the Forklift Survey was conducted.
My editorial in 2014 was on the subject of Resilient supply chains and began thus:
“It is hard to believe that just ten years ago we were riding the crest of a boom cycle. The tech
crash of 2000 was fading into memory, the mining boom was kicking in, then each year Prime
Minister John Howard would throw another lazy billion our way in the way of tax cuts.
“The subsequent Global Financial Crisis seems harder to throw off than most previous recessions
(even though Australia didn’t technically enter a recession), and while the American economy is
showing signs of recovery to the extent that the US Federal Reserve has begun easing its supportive
measures, our own forecasts are still full worrying signs.”
Add in the carnage in the Middle East and the IS atrocities, plus the millions of displaced people
looking for refuge, and you’ve got... well, the same situation today.
Although not quite the same. Into the equation we must also add Global Warming or Climate
Change, whose effects are no longer a ‘future maybe’ but a definite current occurrence, and these
effects seem to be getting faster and more serious the more researchers learn about it (just search,
for example, the internet for “Greenland ice melting”, if you really want to be depressed).
As I wrote at the time: “Resilience is “the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness” (Oxford
Dictionary). Resilience is flexibility, only more... Resilience is being tough as leather, yet adaptable.”
If you haven’t yet, better beef up on your resilience now. Happy and resilient 2014, no, 2016 to you.
