Innovation meets proven technology
A mix of tried and tested technologies and
innovative systems provides the optimal degree
of automation and a flexible, complete result
• Maximum performance and flexibility: there
are 2 OSR Shuttle rack line systems for fast
moving articles. The OSR Shuttle is scalable
• Seamless integration of existing systems:
an existing Miniload with 7 stacker cranes
was seamlessly integrated into the new
• Efficient picking: the OSR Shuttle and
Miniload supply the required goods to the
ergonomic Pick-it-Easy GTP work stations
in the correct sequence. Online orders are
processed at special work stations. Slow-
moving articles are picked from the high-bay
pallet racking using an electronic pick list.
• Comprehensive software: KiSoft WMS and
KiSoft WCS take charge of warehouse
management and warehouse control. All
processes can be centrally managed through
• Flexible in-house transport: the intelligent
Open Shuttles can be easily integrated
without any structural changes, and more can
be added as necessary.
Fleet of warehouse helpers
At the beginning of the shift at the Skjern
distribution centre, new workers Emma, Nicklas
and Frederick are waiting to be given tasks for
the day. Their job: to efficiently cover the complex
in-house transport network. Emma, Nicklas and
Frederick are three intelligent, free-moving open
shuttles, transporting individual parts for kitting
or sample models for staff members, or bringing
goods for customers who pick up their order
directly at the warehouse. The Open Shuttles
operate using swarm intelligence, communicate
with each other and efficiently share the transport
orders with each other. With intelligent route
optimisation and the automatic correction of the
course, the open shuttles always take the fastest
route, whilst avoiding people and obstacles.
Warehouse manager Dennis Pallesen and
his employees are very happy with their new
colleagues: "The transport processes could be
set up very quickly and flexibly with the open
shuttles. This saves us time and we can work
much more efficiently."

METCASH GOES WITH KNAPP breaGrocery company Metcash has
placed its trust in state-of-the-
art technology by Austrian-based
automation specialist Knapp. Using
shuttle systems that automatically
store and retrieve goods from racks,
and ergonomic goods-to-person
workstations, the technologies ease
and streamline order fulfilment.
Following on from the successful
installation of an automated shuttle
system -- the so-called OSR Shuttle
-- at Eastern Creek, Metcash recently
placed another order for a very similar
system for its Brisbane facility to
cater for its Queensland customers.
fulfilment with OSR Shuttle
The Australian food wholesaler recently
ordered another innovative automation
system. The multi-aisle OSR Shuttle
forms the centre of the Metcash's
warehouse in Brisbane. A wide variety
of goods can be stored randomly in
the OSR Shuttle system: by using
this storage strategy in combination
with one shuttle on each rack level,
the OSR Shuttle technology allows full access to all articles at any time, as well as maximum
performance and high system availability.
As orders arrive, the horizontally moving shuttles automatically retrieve the goods from the
racks. The shuttles -- useable for load carriers such as totes, trays or cartons -- transfer the load
carrier to high-speed lifts which take over the vertical transport of the load carriers and trans-
fers them to a conveyor loop which supplies the ergonomic goods-to-person work stations.
Ergonomic and efficient picking with Pick-it-Easy
For efficient and ergonomic order processing at the Brisbane facility, Knapp combines
this high-performance storage system OSR Shuttle with innovative picking technology:
the Pick-it-Easy work stations. One of the important success factors for Metcash is having
articles picked directly into the assigned re-useable totes or cartons. These are inducted
automatically, according to customer profile.
Based on the goods-to-person principle, the Pick-it-Easy work stations ensure highly ergo-
nomic picking: the goods are always provided within ideal reach and height for the operator.
Therefore, the Pick-it-Easy work stations drastically reduce the workload for the operator and
speed up order processing.
Knapp Australia's Robert Seiler comments: "In addition, the ergonomic and intuitive user
interface easyUse guides the operator step-by-step through the order processing and ensures
leading-edge man-machine communication."
Smooth processes along the supply chain
All processes in the OSR Shuttle System at the Metcash facility -- from goods-in to goods-out
-- are supported by smart, customised automation technologies that cater for the customer's
needs. After decanting and random storage in the OSR Shuttle, the goods are sequenced
according to the order structure and transported to the Pick-it-Easy work stations. After order
processing, completed order containers or cartons are temporarily stored in the dispatch
buffer, which utilises another OSR Shuttle. The dispatch buffer ensures that deliveries are
prepared based on their route departure times and the reverse truck loading concept.
